HPT is a systematic and systemic approach to understanding barriers to performance and identifying interventions to improve performance. It is systematic in that there are clearly defined processes for studying and understanding human performance. Typically the processes include:

1| Identifying organizational goals
2| Determining how well those goals are currently met
3| Analyzing the cause for a performance gap
4| Identifying appropriate interventions to close the gap
5| Implementing the interventions, and
6| Evaluating the results

What is Human Performance Technology (HPT)?
HPT is systemic in that it requires a comprehensive look at the organization to understand the components of the performance system in place, understand performance gaps, and identify effective interventions.
